Greetings! This week we'll have the pleasure of hearing from the Rhinoceros Council.

The magnificent rhino has been on Earth some 14 million years. They are huge herbivores whose lips are perfect for pulling grasses and low-lying plants (white rhinos) or plucking leaves (black rhinos.)

As you know, their horns, made of keratin like hair and fingernails, are thought to be medicine, although there is nothing in TCM texts referring to this. Chinese and UK TCM communities have decried the use of rhino horn, but Vietnam has the largest demand for the horns.

As a result of this continuing demand and poaching, all rhinos are endangered. The African northern white rhino is virtually extinct. The only living members are two adult females. The Javan rhino population is down to double digits and the Sumatran to triple digits. The Indian and Nepalese rhinos exist only in National Parks.

Protection for all rhinos remains a conservation priority.

What do these massive, yet vulnerable herbivorous beings wish to share with us? Join us this week to find out.
